It‘s a sizable industry. In the Far East, there are many fortune tellers and feng-shui practitioners who also provide baby naming consulting services. They draw from history, literature, astrology, numerology, mysticism, etc.

While it’s not uncommon to find multiple Johns or multiple Matts or multiple Chrises or multiple Jennifers in a Western school classroom, its much rarer to find two kids sharing the Same given name in a Chinese classroom.

Having 50K+ characters to choose from, and the Chinese often use two characters to form a given name, there are (50K)^2 combinations for a given name, big enough a solution space to let consultants play.

There are also no lack of Asian parents who hire Western consultants to give their babies thoughtful English names, for example: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/21/beau-jessup-teen-pays-college-fees-by-naming-chinese-babies.html

Both our kids have pretty traditional names, on purpose. For our 2nd we went in the hospital with 2 name options and left the hospital after picking a 3rd (previously unselected) name. Good story 89th.

@George-K Somehow we wound up with the name Finley… Some people have trouble with names…

Although, I think my first options of Amos or Holden were pretty good…

I wonder if the people who pay for this complain about the outrageous price of gas

          I was only joking

No. There are three federal and multiple state laws against it. Let me dig through my files, I should still have the paperwork somewhere.

There was an interview with George Clooney (the actor), who was talking about giving his kid (or kids) pretty regular names.

He said something like - "So many Hollywood people give their kids really stupid names. There was no way I was going to do that. Growing up as the child of me is enough of a burden. I would not want to burden them with a stupid name on top of that!!!"

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

I feel better about Finley, now. Still would have preferred Amos…”I am that guy”…
