Thanks all - and yes @Copper the previous owners have some rock in certain parts and we find it both attractive and functional, so we might expand that a bit too, especially on the sides of the house where the gates and hilly parts are.
We're doing brown mulch this year. MS likes the look of black mulch— it’s very crisp and graphic— but it doesn’t age as well. Brown mulch hides organic debris which usually turns brown.
The mulch beds should be cut in with a v-groove 8” wide or so at the grass edge or sidewalk/ driveway for a crisper look and easier maintenance.
Also, make sure the root balls or tree trunks are not covered with mulch — leave 4” or so for tree health.

I always get "bright medium (grind) fir". Which is, I guess, Douglas Fir. Readily available in Oregon. I like the red-orange-ness of it against our green grass.
I also have used some river rock in spots. Easy to keep the weeds picked. Leaves do have a way of snuggling down between rocks but what doesn't get blown out with my leaf blower I burn out with my weed torch.

Fresh mulch. We went with the dark brown.

We also added the obligatory trampoline…

Well, trampolines are tres chic.

Beautiful house and property (and gardens!), IT. Thanks for sharing.
Btw you really should do something about that tree overhanging your back yard.
Haha!
Their lawyer is meeting with them this week, and is supposed to get back to our lawyer thereafter.

Thanks - cedar. Minnesota Northern White Cedar. Love it in our backyard where it can get shady. Adds some light, lasts a long time, and even keeps some insects away. Oh and smells great. For the front yard garden we'll probably go with a more traditional brown hardwood mulch.
