LOL Aqua, I have no idea.
All I know, and maybe I'm way wrong, is this whole "meta" world idea is an absolute fail. First, it looks like a really poor 90s version of sim games. Second, it feels like an idea that silicon valley board rooms think "could be as big as the universe!" but really... who the eff would want to put on VR goggles and hang out with strangers in a fake world? Yes, I get the irony of posting that here in TNCR, minus the VR goggles of course.

I love the Oculus goggles for gaming, but the idea of Meta is pretty silly. I have zero interest in going into any of those social areas. A lot of gamers are laughing at the concept.
Zuckerberg must have heard about all those cyberpunk novels (I can't believe he actually read one), but missed the bit about them being dystopian.

Have you read any of the "Bobiverse" books?

I've never tried them, but imagine I would really enjoy exploring places with them (flying, space, cool places around the world, under water...)

No, I've not. It sounds silly, but I was always kind of put off by the name. Maybe I should give them a look.

I've only done it once, and it was very, very cool. The undersea experience was great, as was being onstage at an Elton John concert. But no, I would not do it for social reasons. Holograms and video walls would be much better.

I’ve wanted to get a set but I just don’t have the time to use them. When Finley gets a little older, perhaps.

Couple of things:
- Algo changes on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Feeds are no longer chronological, but filtered by engagement. You only see updates from people you follow if the initial post passes the algo's initial benchmark test for engagement. Otherwise it's lost. This is old news but it's important to consider along with the following:
- Notifications don't mean anything. Subscribing and signing up for YouTube notifications doesn't mean you'll actually get notified. And across the board, YouTube engagement is way down. Many content creators are starting to look elsewhere because the growth isn't nearly what it used to be.
- "Dark social" is becoming a thing. But why is it becoming a thing? Why in the world is that growing in use, and engagement on other traditional platforms is waning?
Basically, I think social media as we know it is changing again. People are starting to figure out that social media will never be making good on its initial promises. I mean really, who the fuck wants to follow influencers? Of those you follow on whatever platform you're on, how many are influencers, how many are people you know, and how many are people who have as small a following as you?
People are walking away from this shit, and learning on their own that 1:1 interactions are where it's at. It's why Discord servers are blowing up for all kinds of subject matter right now, even though it was only intended to be for gaming. It's happening on Twitch, too.
Ken Burns isn't behind the times, he's ahead. Which is insane, because, Ken Burns.

YouTube is killing itself with its own algorithms. The wonderful, wild wackiness of YouTube was being able to wade through the dross and find those bits that were truly unique and interesting.
Now, it's no more than a morass like Twitter, with the same people doing the same things, with the same people agreeing or disagreeing, while the vast majority of humanity doesn't give a damn if the whole thing disappeared in a whimpering electronic burst.

What's completely screwed them, though, is that they forgot who made the platform worth checking out in the first place. Many, many video makers are either jumping ship outright, making moves to, or treating YT as storage management only. You might be pissed as a user, but so are the uploaders. It's failing.

I think that might be over-stating it a tad. It's still the most visited site on the net.

It's not overstating anything. I'm talking about trajectory, not status. So, you're right for now. But they need to make moves or face some serious decline.

I probably watch YouTube more than any single TV channel.
Yeah yeah, I know, OK boomer. My son probably watches it more than any other channel, too, and he's connected to all kinds of shit I know nothing about.

I'm on it a lot, I've had to make shit for it, and know a handful of folks who made it a full-time gig. Those folks, by the way, were more than fine before, but all of them are making alternative plans now. Not one feels confident about the future on that platform.

To be honest, I don't really care. If it goes the way of Netscape and Yahoo, so be it. There'll always be another site.

I'm looking forward to it, actually.
