So, if I understand correctly, the answer to your question in the title of the forum thread is "We dont know!" LOL

I would think that one of the hardest things to include in any type of study are things such as cultural attitudes, and cultural history. Hard to get an accurate measurement.

Person A says: "Look at Chicago. Very strict gun laws. Very high gun crimes."

Person B says: "Look at Japan. Very very strict gun laws. Pretty much zero gun crimes."

I agree with this statement from the report

"The cultural differences are too big and there's just too much uncertainty in the data..."

      Exactly.

I would think that one of the hardest things to include in any type of study are things such as cultural attitudes, and cultural history. Hard to get an accurate measurement.

Exactly, again. Look at Chicago, and its laws. The culture of the gun offenders is such that laws are irrelevant.

Person A says: "Look at Chicago. Very strict gun laws. Very high gun crimes."

Person B says: "Look at Japan. Very very strict gun laws. Pretty much zero gun crimes."

You got it. With the strictest gun laws available, unless you change the culture, you're not going to change much.

Now, the other question is, how do gun laws in Japan, Germany, and Britain compare with the US. I really don't know. The US is so fragmented that it's hard to compare.

The other problem is that, with the number of firearms already in circulation, laws won't have much of an effect.

      Just random thoughts....

I am not 100% sure, but I believe in Japan, if you do own a gun, it has to be stored at a "secure" place like a gun shooting facility, etc. You cannot keep it in your house and certainly cannot walk around with one. (Pretty sure Singapore is the same way)

It's all about culture. Most people in the UK really don't want to own guns - certainly not hand guns. Shotguns are a different thing for hunting, clay-pigeon shooting and what have you. I'm sure there's a small and noisy pro-gun lobby, but growing up absolutely nobody I knew owned a hand gun.

              I was only joking

                Precisely.

If you believe the study I posted, laws don't make a difference.

Show me how much gun violence is initiated by law abiding gun owners.
