Academy Awards - Will Smith Edition
-
I think the new stage layout (with Will Smith only steps [no stairs] from the host) made that possible... not sure I really blame Will Smith. If a comedian makes a joke about my wife's illness, I'd be seeing red.
Here's the uncensored clip:

Wouldn't we all?
But, does that justify an assault?
(Rock declined to press charges, by the way)
Seen on twitter: "Will Smith attacked Chris Rock and then helped us all heal by explaining how tough God’s plan for him is."

No, doesn't justify the assault, but makes it understandable. Smith didn't have a plan when he stood up, could've gone with a fake punch, a real punch, a slap, or a push... he went for the slap, I guess. I like the uncensored clip above because it really lets the raw "Keep my wife's name..." audio play out as Smith's yelling echoes through the room. AWKWARD.

"Understandable" ≠ "Right"
A guy whose family is starving robs a bank. It's understandable...
OTOH, check out the CTA thread I posted yesterday. Some guys have a disagreement, and one of them empties his pistol at the other guy (I think I heard ten shots).

All of us except for Ted Cruz.

It’s not his decision.

The LAPD confirmed on Monday that Rock declined to file a police report.
"LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program," the department told CNN in a statement. "The incident involved one individual slapping another. The individual involved has declined to file a police report. If the involved party desires a police report at a later date, LAPD will be available to complete an investigative report."

They’re punting on purpose. Cops can charge misdemeanor assault whether the victim wants the, to or not

I don’t know, I kind of think the world would be a little bit better if people had to weigh the very real odds of getting their ass kicked for running their mouth too far.
There’s something to be said for settling differences out back. Within reason, of course.

I respect him for it. It was a cruel and tasteless joke that should never have been spoken.
I also respect the way Rock handled it. My hope is he did not know about her alopecia and will apologize.
Agreed. If you look carefully you can tell Rock almost says something about how he could keep going (after Smith stops yelling) but Rock stops himself from poking the bear further. Somewhat impressive recovery of the situation.

Yeah, somebody says something rude, so then you slap them. Then they shoot you in "self defence".
I don't think confronting anybody physically is a good idea when so many people carry weapons.

Isn't this the definition of "toxic masculinity?"
Somewhere, I read that he didn't react until she said something to him.

Will Smith certainly didn't resemble his wise-cracking Fresh Prince character, wittily making fun of all and sundry, did he?

Quite the contrary, he reminded us all that he's still from West Philadelphia, born and raised.

As I think I had mentioned before, the rest of the night was a cock-up too.
