Plausible maybe, but what I wrote was deliberate and not without malice.

I wonder if Witkoff understands that Putin is just thumbing his nose at the recent US attempts to stymie his cash flow from oil exports:

“Russia is a reliable supplier of oil, gas, coal — everything required for the development of India’s energy,” Putin said Friday as the two leaders met for their summit focused on energy, defense and trade.

“We are ready to continue uninterrupted shipments of fuel for the fast-growing Indian economy,” the Russian president added.

Modi thanked Putin for what he called Russia’s “unwavering commitment toward India,” noting that energy security remained a “strong and important pillar” of the relationship.

We’d be hard pressed to do much about shipment to India, and their need is huge. That’s even before the lower transportation costs.

I really don’t know how to describe my ill feelings about this:

Russia has welcomed US President Donald Trump's new National Security Strategy, calling it "largely consistent" with Moscow's vision.

Sounds like an abdication of American leadership in the west.

Putin’s advocacy for conservative values is utterly self serving. We need not think he’s committed to them. They just sell domestically and now apparently here.

You could say the same about the other guy in the photo too.

                I was only joking

Neither demagogue can remotely claim ownership to much of anything conservative, let alone the values associated with conservatism.

Security guarantees. Didn't we already do that in Budapest? Does anyone believe we will go to war if Russia rearms and restarts the fight?

I do. Putin got away with it in 2014 and again in 2022. He has to know beyond any doubt that if and when there is a next time, Western troops are coming to Ukraine’s aid. That does not necessarily include the US but it does not preclude it either.

Interesting. Why didn't it happen in 2014?

Good question. I guess Angela Merkel and Barak Obama preferred not to escalate matters much beyond indignation and a strongly worded letter or two. Oh yes, and a few weak to moderate sanctions which only strengthened the Russian agri-food sector and energy industries. For its part, NATO members began training Ukrainian soldiers in NATO warfare techniques as the first steps towards eventual integration into the alliance.

Which should have happened long ago.
