In fairness, promotions to general are not a scarce resource. It's not like one has to mine for generals, you can just create them on the spot, like a Star Trek replicator.

Indeed.
As @Renauda said in one of the early posts in this thread, "General" might mean different things to different nations and their armies.
But, it seems like the Russian military is losing a significant percentage of their senior leadership in the assault on Ukraine.
So, assuming that these guys were "The Best," who's going to be promoted to take up their positions? The "Almost-The-Best?"

These are just Russian Generals. Wait until the Specifics show up. They are the top brass.

Colonel?
Maybe the Russian system is different, but over here this is below the general ranks. Senior, but not super senior.

We can't give you a raise this year, but we can give you a better title.

Amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the general staff of the Ukraine forces have claimed that they have killed the commander of the 8th General Army of the Southern Military District of the Armed Forces of Russia, namely Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev. The advisor to the president's office of Ukraine, Aleksey Arestovich, informed that the general of Russia was killed in an attack by the forces of Ukraine at an airfield named Chernobaevka near Mykolaiv.

In the U.S. Army, colonels do not lead from the front. They are brigade commanders.

Black Sea fleet deputy commander killed in Ukraine
So u think the Ukrainians are getting real time intel on the location of top officers and picking them off, or just bad luck?
A lot of high ranking officers dead in the course of three weeks.

From that same piece, more good news if it's true. A battalion of Belarus troops has gone over to fight for Mariupol.

wrote on 20 Mar 2022, 18:37 last edited by RenaudaI saw a piece about this yesterday. These are volunteers of Belorussians living abroad and are against the Lukashenka regime. Not all that different than the Canadian volunteer brigades forming here and going over to Ukraine.
I have also read though, that Minsk is hesitant to send in its own troops to assist the Russians for fear of them mutinying and joining with the Ukrainian defenders.

Read an interview with a former U.S. Marine that had volunteered to fight. He said it was pretty chaotic right now. The personnel situation is very fluid, with guys coming in every day and no weapons or equipment to issue them.
Right now, a warm, dry floor to sleep on and a field ration or two per day was what they were getting. Hopefully, that gets untangled pretty quick.
