    Does anyone think that Putin will leave Ukraine?

    If he does, can he retain his leadership?

    I don't see a way out for him, other than to keep on keepin' on, and that will make the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan look pretty.

      @89th

      With citizens in every country, including probably half of Russia, not in support of what is going on.....

      I wish I could share in your optimism about the lack of support in Russia. I do not believe for a second that the vast majority of the Russian public has not bought into Putin’s propaganda narrative blaming all of this on “Ukrainian Nazis”and NATO.

      I occasionally follow a Twitter feed for a top Russian chess player, who you would assume was a fairly smart guy, and he is parroting the Russian propaganda as though it's acknowledged truth. There's no shortage of other Russians agreeing with him. Needless to say, he's being roasted by pretty much everybody else, but in his view that is just due to their ignorance and stupidity.

      Of course, I can think of at least one American professional chess player who wasn't the most rational individual when it came to world affairs, so maybe it means nothing.

      I was only joking

        So, what is the propaganda? What are the Russian masses being fed?

          So, what is the propaganda? What are the Russian masses being fed?

          From what I've read, this is a response to US-sponsored Ukrainian aggression. The Russians are essentially defending themselves. The (Jewish) President of Ukraine is a Nazi sympathiser, as are his supporters. There was a fire in Odessa that was supported or instigated by Ukraine, in which a lot of people died at the hands of Ukrainian nationalists.

          They posted a Chinese picture of all the wars that America has "started" in the last 50-odd years, and said "So who's the real threat to world peace?"

          It's a big pile of shit, basically.

              Then Russians deserve any and all economic punishment the world can muster. And then some.

                            @Friday

                            Putin would have imagined insidious US involvement if only Mickey Mouse or an Elvis impersonator was seen on the streets of Kyiv.

                            Biden and family have little or nothing to do with it.

                            On the other hand I would be a little more confident about all this if someone along the likes of Mitt Romney or possibly Nikki Halley were in the White House right now. In the meantime Joe is the man, and from what I can see, he has stepped forward to do his duty. He certainly has not rewarded the khuilo in the Kremlin by proclaiming his tactics as “genius”.

                              The Jewish Nazi and anti-Russian Ukrainian aggression is clearly nonsense. He's a democratically elected president. Ukraine didn't start this war.

                              It's really a stretch to claim your acting in self-defence when you're occupying somebody else's country.

                              Whether or not they believe that Ukraine is part of Russia is kind of immaterial. It's what Ukraine believes that is important.

                                His tactics were proclaimed as genius in light of Biden's initial response and the fact that Joe has not moved (as far as I know) to turn off the Russian oil spigot to the U.S. If Putin had rolled them up in 72 hours, before any Western intervention, then yes, it's pretty smart.

                                Because I know, and I know you know, that most Western countries really didn't care about the Ukraine, except as the bad side of tracks in the Wild West, where money could be made with a minimum of scruples.

                                  To be fair, Trump described himself as a genius, so the bar's pretty low.

                                    Well Putin didn’t roll anything up in 72 hours. So I refuse to discuss the former POTUS any further. All I know is that between 2016 and 2020 he appeared to the world as cowed by Putin. So much so that, as Jon reminded us earlier, he refused to export weapons to Ukraine.

                                    Besides, right now none of this should be about the US president past or serving. It should be about how are we are going to deal with Putin and Russia now and going forward.

                                    Elbows up!

                                          And we're still buying Russian oil. As of this week, maybe Venezuelan, who knows?

                                          What I do know is this: There needs to be a serious discussion in the West, where energy needs are looked at without a pollyannish evaluation, or pie-in-the-sky green projections. We need to factor in oil, coal, natural gas, solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal, using what makes economic sense for the region in which it is located. And we need to treat energy as a strategic resource.
