One of the benefits of understanding air pollution caused by civilization.

Webb Telescope might be able to detect other civilizations by their air pollution

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launched last December, has been slowly powering up its instruments and unfurling its sunshield, and is now in the process of aligning its mirrors in preparation for operation. Within a few months, the most powerful space telescope ever built is going to set its sights on the stars. Astronomers are hoping that what JWST sees will change the way we understand our universe, just as the Hubble Space Telescope did decades before.

One tantalizing capability that JWST offers that Hubble could not is the opportunity to directly image planets orbiting distant stars, and maybe, just maybe, detect signs of life.

It is just crazy the stuff that they are able to do.

Out of curiosity, how many people think that

      A. There are planets out there with life on them
      B. There are planets out there with intelligent life on them (exclude earth)

For me, my answer would be

      A. 100%
      B. 85%

It's a really big universe, you know.

Now, the next obvious question is, even if "B" is 100%, how many of them have the tech/ability to travel the distance to interact with another planet with intelligent life?

One of my favorite authors, Alastair Reynolds, deals with the Fermi Paradox in a very interesting way, by the way.

It is just crazy the stuff that they are able to do.

Wait 100 years. Remember, it was only 102 years ago that man left the surface of the earth on a powered flight.

I had to look up Fermi Paradox. As you say, it is a BIG universe. The earth is just a speck in the overall system. Easy to overlook I think. Also, with light years, someone who spied on earth may be seeing us from 1000's or years ago. Not much evidence of intelligent life at that time that would be visible from space.

          Interesting to think about.

            @taiwan_girl hard, hard questions.

The closest star to us is 4 years away, at the speed of light.

I'm too lazy to look up how close the nearest planet in the "Goldilock's Zone" is to us, but I'd guess it's at least 10s of light years. Let's just say 50 light years...

So, anything that we did that they could possibly see would take 50 years for them to see. For them to get back to us would be another 50 years.

100 years for there and back.

Speed of light is a real bitch. F'ing Einstein.

Subspace communication is the primary form of communication, used by most warp capable species across the galaxy. Subspace communications are dispatched through subspace in excess of warp factor +9.9999, and can thus, travel incredible distances. ( ST reference: The Star Trek Encyclopedia)

I often wonder if scientists, or for that matter the "if you question any of this then you are a science denier" crowd, ever take the time to actually listen to themselves....

"If you believe that some 'God' just created everything out of nothing in an instant, you're an idiot"
"The universe and everything in it was created by a big bang where nothing exploded into everything"....

"It's ok to kill a baby in the womb because it's not yet life"
"If we can find even a single solitary one celled thing on another planet it will prove life exists on other planets..."

Then there's the notion that we can find life on another planet by looking for pollution.... if the civilization is advanced enough to pollute, it's advanced enough to be looking for life on other planets... yet we've never found even a hint that that has ever happened... alien civilizations are probably advanced well beyond us, able to travel billions of light years by "bending time"..... yet these genius super beings have only ever shown themselves to drunk Bubbas living in trailer parks...... not to mention a civilization so advan ed should have long ago solved the problem of pollution....

You could make an attempt to be a little more original in your insults. Your lack of creativity in designing good insults is in fact more insulting than the actual insults.

Due to the well-documented stupidity of scientists, apparently there's a space telescope that is being developed and designed by non-scientists, since we all know how clever those guys are.

Fifteen years in and they're holding 'focus-groups' and 'creativity workshops' to decide on a colour scheme for the mirror.

                                I was only joking

You could make an attempt to be a little more original in your insults. Your lack of creativity in designing good insults is in fact more insulting than the actual insults.

Please, oh wise and sage superior being - tell me which of my examples was wrong. I do believe it was scientists who came up with the big bang theory, wasn't it? I do believe it was scientists who said that finding even a single celled organism on mars would be proof that life exists on mars wasn't it? Are you willing, oh wise one, my I intellectual superior, to admit that it was NOT science that those who support abortion on demand based their claim that it was ok to abort a baby still in the womb because it wasn't yet life?

                                  Fuck you, you elitist asshole.

At least we now have the answer to my first question of "do the "if you disagree with any of this you are a science denier" crowd e er listen to themselves..,, the answer is no. Klaus has given their standard response - "you are a science denier!!"

I defy him to show a single thing I said about denying science.....

I just gored his God, and he doesn't like it. What an empty, shallow mind.....

Those would be MBA’s in consultation with ersatz intellectuals who refer to themselves as social scientists.

How many religious people does it take to build a space telescope?

I look forward to the punchline with enthusiasm.
