that "next guy" right now is China?
Yes, I think for sure that China will increase their funding 1000+% as a way to show their nose at the US.
Why would one think that giving the most money buys you influence? Doesn’t seem to be working out for the US.

The mainland Chinese have been very strong in trying to use money to get influence over the past 20 years or so. Lots of infrastructure projects in Africa and SE Asia for example. They will give no interest (or forgive) loans to build infrastructure. The countries are required to use mainland Chinese contractors and companies and then they are tied to the Chinese for spare parts, upgrades, etc.
Re: why it does not seem to be working for the US:
Part of it is that countries have taken for granted what the US have given to them over the years. Like many things, at first it is a bonus and looked at with favor, but over time, it becomes an entitlement.
Another reason is the for most common people around the world, President Trump is not really admired. And since he represents the US, by this reasoning, the common people have lost some admiration for the US. (And please do not say that I am anti Trump and that is the only reason I am saying this. Most common people around the world only see President Trump at his worse, making goofy statements, etc. and this forms their opinion)

I think the determination about what "most common people around the world" think about Trump is clouded by your own personal opinion.

My wife tells me that Chinese folk think we're one step away from anarchy, because racism. I think as one zooms out and is less personally involved with a society, the narrative driven by the MSM about that society becomes more and more the truth.

That is true. They are receiving their news from local sources, but I think those local sources are sourcing the information from other places.
However, to say or assume that the news media is liberal bias against President Trump everywhere around the world is a bit of a "long stretch".
The personality and image of President Trump does not go over very well in many parts of Asia. That is probably more of a cultural bias than a liberal or conservative bias.

I've seen several "man on the street" interviews of random people in several countries, including Taiwan. What they showed is quite different from your take on it.

I agree. Taiwan has not had a better friend than President Trump in a long time.
But, I will still stand by my personal experience of speaking with people first hand who are living in various countries. President Trump does not have a very good majority image overseas.

I guess his bad image overseas is one of the reasons 80% of them would give their left leg to come here to live....

@Larry The majority like him in Taiwan, and I love him for the friend he has been to Taiwan. And maybe the same in the Philippines also.
But that doesn't change the fact that the majority of people outside the US do not have a good opinion of him.
Pew Research on foreign opinions of President Trump
Quote:
In nearly all nations where trends are available, Trump receives lower ratings than his predecessor, Barack Obama. Now of course, President Trump is not the President of the world - he is President of the US.
And my comments are only regarding the opinion of non-US people on President Trump, nothing to do with his policies, etc.

Of course they loved Obama. He let them know from day one that they could walk all over him. They didn't have any respect for him though. It's easy to make people like you if you let then run over you.
