I read somewhere that the electric batteries were helping to keep the fire burning and will make it difficult to put out.

Coast Guard Suspects EV Source of Ongoing Fire

According to an Automotive News report via Reuters, a cargo ship carrying 2,857 vehicles caught fire off the Dutch coast while on route to Egypt from Germany. Of the 23 crew members on the ship, one died while several others were injured. Some crew members even jumped overboard to escape the fire which reportedly rapidly spread throughout the ship. The remainder of the crew were airlifted off the boat by a rescue helicopter. Approximately 350 of the cars on board are Mercedes-Benz vehicles, but the automaker hasn't disclosed what models were on board; it's unclear what other makes and models are onboard.

As far as what caused the blaze, no definitive cause has been given. According to an unnamed coast guard official, it is suspected that an EV battery fire is the culprit as there were 25 EVs on board. It is unclear if any of those EVs are Mercedes-Benz vehicles or are from other automakers. The ship has been towed away from shipping lanes and may eventually sink, taking nearly 3,000 vehicles into the depths with it. The ship is nearly 10 years old and can carry up to 4,000 vehicles total, so this wasn't simply a factor of overloading.

On reading the article I linked, it looks like it's a different ship.

A fire blazed on a cargo ship off the Dutch coast with nearly 3,000 vehicles on board on Wednesday, killing one member of the crew and injuring several others, the coastguard said.

Several crew members were forced to jump overboard after the fire began on Tuesday night on the 199-metre (655-foot) Panama-registered Fremantle Highway as it was en route from Germany to Egypt.

The Indian Embassy in the Netherlands said in a social media post the fire had "resulted in the death of an Indian seafarer and injuries to the crew", and that it was in touch with family of the deceased. Japan's Shoei Kisen, which owns the ship, said the entire crew of 21 was Indian.

Rescue ships sprayed water onto the burning vessel to cool it down, but using too much water risked its sinking, the Dutch coastguard said. It was attached to a salvage vessel to prevent it drifting.

The fire might last for several days, Dutch news agency ANP reported, citing the coastguard. Smoke continued to billow from the vessel near the northern Dutch island of Ameland.

The ship in the original post was the Felicity Ace.

That's amazing. Lightening er, EVs can strike twice. Much like with crashing a couple of 737 Max aircraft, when an "accident" strikes twice - may have to pay some attention to this.

Fires involving petroleum are almost completely unheard of, of course, and on the extremely rare occasions they do occur, are typically put out within minutes.

                                        It happened again:

The crew of a cargo ship carrying 3,000 vehicles to Mexico, including 800 electric vehicles, abandoned ship after they could not control a fire aboard the vessel in waters off Alaska’s Aleutian island chain.

A large plume of smoke was initially seen at the ship’s stern coming from the deck loaded with electric vehicles Tuesday, according to U.S. Coast Guard photos and a Wednesday statement from the ship’s management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime.

A cargo ship that had been delivering new vehicles to Mexico sank in the North Pacific Ocean, weeks after crew members abandoned ship when they couldn't extinguish an onboard fire that left the carrier dead in the water.

The Morning Midas sank Monday in international water off Alaska's Aleutian Islands chain, the ship's management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime, said in a statement.

"There is no visible pollution," said Petty Officer Cameron Snell, an Alaska-based U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson. "Right now we also have vessels on scene to respond to any pollution."

The Coast Guard said that the vessel reportedly had 350 metric tons of marine gas oil and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard.
