As a hobby, I'm endlessly fascinated by the notion of never having back surgery. I find it a every interesting proposition, one I reflect on often because my back is fucked, pretty much always has been, and my parents have had many, many back surgeries in their day. Some of them have gone awry to the point of causing permanent problems. I'd very much like to avoid those same problems to the fullest extent possible.

I already do a handful of stretches to keep this at bay, but now that working from home appears to be a permanent thing, I started getting serious about a home office. So, I picked up a standing desk.

Only problem is I'm kinda tall, so I had to get one that could work with someone of my height.

I got a VIVO and it's one rad bastard. It's electric, it holds plenty of weight and there are even memory buttons, so you can have preset heights depending on which chair you're using, or who's using the desk.

This is my first day using it and I haven't felt like this in years. My back is fine. I mean, no pain anywhere, it's completely fine.

So, I have that going for me.

    Which is nice.

    Please love yourself.

Good decision. I like using them sometimes, but I don't have one.

I have a history of low back problems, too.

My assumption is that this is in part due to weak core muscles and hence bad posture (or maybe the causality is the other way around), and maybe in part due to bad mobility.

I try to address the former by dedicated exercises for core muscles. So for it seems to work well, but I have started just recently.

I think there's a mountain of evidence that suggests this sort of thing is a lot more in our hands than we're made to believe by doctors who should damn well know better, but don't. You have to do the right things, which can be tricky to figure out as everyone's different, but incredible progress can be made with the right kind of regular effort.

For right now, regular light stretching + standing desk is working out for me. Likely I'll have to ramp up the preventative maintenance later on, but that's okay.

          Please love yourself.

Glad you found something that works. Me, if I stand in one place too long, my lower back hurts.

Exactly what happens to me if I sit for too long. 😄 Maybe variation would help? That's been beneficial to me, too.

That's my truth as well. A gathering where everyone is standing - is tougher on my back than a 12 mile run.

Awesome! I have one as well and it's a nice option to raise it whenever I feel "hunched over" too long. I am also intrigued by those really slow walking treadmills you can get for under the desk, but I doubt I'll get one. And stretching, that is one thing I always say I'll do more of but never, ever do. Ugh.

I often pair the things I don't want to do with the things I do, which for me has been really effective. So for stretching, that's when I burn through some podcasts; I save 'em up for that time so I have crap to listen to.
