Interesting stuff. In our (almost) 100-year-old house, with hot water heat (radiators) powered by a gas boiler, our bills were outrageous. The house had zero insulation in the walls, and lousy storm windows outside wooden single-pane double-hung. The walls were 3 courses of brick, then air, then plaster on lath, with a nice air gap between the brick and lath. The place was around 3600 square feet (including a finished attic).
It was not unusual, in January and February, to have bills north of $500; and this was in the 1990s, early 2000s.
Now, in the condo which is about 2000 square feet, we have forced air. I preferred radiators, but...The building is well insulated, and the spaces on two of my walls, floor and ceiling are all occupied and heated.
I now run about $700 per year - and that includes cooking.
