Nobody ever did it better than the French.
And yes, unless you want to be quirky, the menu and decor should be at least complimentary.
That said, the newer fast casual places just have to be modern with images that reflect the food and/or the culture behind it. The other day we went to Paris Banh Mi, a new small chain that reflects the French influence on Vietnamese food. Great sandwiches, etc, pastries, teas. Modern, very little decor, but everyone working there was Vietnamese. Interesting.
