The mustang is a breed which is known to be on the shorter side, although very hearty and powerful just like the horses described in this article.
It’s my understanding that the horses that were used by Genghis Khan were also of small stature.

Probably ate less, too. My niece had a thoroughbred jumper and I've never seen a horse eat so much. I don't think her quarterhorse ate even half of what the thoroughbred did.
