Which is what makes these mandates and the court arguments ridiculous in my opinion. The vaccines are not containing or even slowing spread at this point.

The delicious irony in this is that she was in Florida vacationing, and about 2 weeks earlier she claimed it was too dangerous to go to work in the House of Representatives.

And, there's that video of her partying, maskless. Yeah, there's that.

And @jolly, I'm not convinced (still) that masks make a difference, but AOC presumably is, so, mask-up, Congresswoman!

(too lazy to look it up)

Vermont is the most highly-vaccinated state in the country, and also has one of the highest per-capita case counts.

That could be due to a number of different reasons. Hard to read much out of such a factoid.

IIRC, the more serious attempts to quantify transmissability of vaccinated vs non/vaccinated suggested that vaccination reduces transmissability by a factor of 10 or something. It's not even close to safely preventing spread, but it is still a significant reduction.

One thing that gets on my nerves in these discussions is that many people can't wrap their head around the fact that there is a thing between "the vaccine has no effect whatsoever" and "the vaccine prevents infection and transmission 100%".

It's already established that being "fully vaxxed" does not develop the antibodies needed to fight Omicron. I could have had my second dose 3 weeks ago and I would be fully exposed against Omicron.

So being vaccinated by itself does not stop spread. Now, boosters supposedly do, but 1) Boosters are not in the mandates being discussed 2) their effect fades quickly (10 weeks, then it drops fast) and 3) having 10 times the antibodies does not equal 10 times the protection because Omicron can evade these antibodies as well.

Now, let's talk practical applications. I personally know around 2 dozen people that have tested positive with COVID over the last 3 weeks. At least 75% of them are vaxxed AND boosted. Anecdotal? Sure is. Do I trust my own lying eyes? Sure do.

I'm very much against the dubious miracle claims about the efficacy of vaccines, but from what I understand, the available data suggest that the vaccines do very significantly reduce the risk for severe complications, including for Omicron, and do still reduce infections and transmission.

"Prevent", "stop", "work" etc. - these are the wrong words to discuss the vaccines. You need words that refer to a degree. Once we agree on that, we can discuss the degree and at what degrees the vaccines are useful or not.

It's already established that being "fully vaxxed" does not develop the antibodies needed to fight Omicron

                              Has it?

I'm very much against the dubious miracle claims about the efficacy of vaccines, but from what I understand, the available data suggest that the vaccines do very significantly reduce the risk for severe complications, including for Omicron, and do still reduce infections and transmission.

"Prevent", "stop", "work" etc. - these are the wrong words to discuss the vaccines. You need words that refer to a degree. Once we agree on that, we can discuss the degree and at what degrees the vaccines are useful or not.
