Bye-bye Ben

Some good quarterbacks coming next draft. Ridder, Corral, etc.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Rudolph being given a year to see what he can do. He wasn’t that bad the year Ben was out. Plus, I’m hesitant to invest heavily into a QB until we have improved our O-Line.
Look at Tannehill and Tennessee. That shows the difference an o-line makes.

It's symbiotic. Brees made some average lines look very good, with shotgun snaps along with three step drops and a ball that came out in 2.5 seconds or less. OTOH, when the Saints were putting up ridiculous offensive numbers, from OG to OG a defense couldn't budge the interior line, and all the tackles had to do was ride wide while Breesus stepped up in the pocket to throw the deep seam routes.
Even Jimmy Graham knows if he hadn't chased a dollar, Brees would have put him in the HOF...

Part of Ben’s biggest issues this year has been anticipating the hits. He’s gotten hit so much this season and last that he’s turtle guy up well before actual contact. That’s not necessarily a bad thing except he’s doing it a half second before. What made Ben be Ben was his ability to throw off would be tackles. Without that…

Everybody's human.
Getting hit hurts.

Yeah, but that’s why we need to worry about the o-line before we go get a QB. Cincinnati is treading a dangerous line with Burrow. He’s doing great but taking too many hits. And he’s not built like Ben. I don’t want to see the Steelers be one bad day away from irrelevance. Get a couple of blue chip o-linemen, Pay Munchak whatever it takes to come back (including offering him the HC position, I am growing less enamored of Tomlin) and get a Middle Linebacker to allow our all-pros on D be all-pros (Watt, Hayward, and Fitzpatrick are incredible).
Fill the holes at o-line and with a running back like Najee, we can win against anyone in the league.

I think you make a good point about Joe. The college game doesn't always translate to the pro game. In the NFL, the defensive players are (on the average) bigger, stronger and faster. Even in a speed league like the SEC, there are linebackers that run 4.8 forties. In the pros, linebackers all run 4.5. At 240 pounds.
I think that's why guys like Lamar Jackson or Murry can have some success, but will have trouble staying on the field for 17 games or having a 15-year career. Too many hard hits.

If you are watching, look how KC’s o line protects Mahome. Brilliant. That is what we need.
Speaking of hard hits, AB has never been the same since getting hit in that Bengals game…

Farewell to Ben! Also I hope he gets the last laugh against the Ravens next weekend. While I started rooting for the Steelers in 1992, I’d say Big Ben’s career overlapped with my peak fandom from about 2003-2020. Now onto to the Vikings for the next 40 years…
Ben deserves retirement. He’s been holding that team’s offense together with duct tape. Time for a rest.

Should Pittsburgh consider starting Mason Rudolph this week? Let’s face it, while Ben contributed several important drives to get them to the playoffs, many of their struggles offensively have been his fault. Do they stand a better chance by starting Rudolph? What would be fair for the team? Maybe even just sitting him this week to recover? Unless they’ve got some kind of shot that will de-age his muscles and tendons for 4 hours on Sunday, this is it…
