I’m going to guess that it’s because (1) gears rotate in a circle and (2) it’s easy to accurately divide the circumference of a circle into six segments using its radius.
Look into ancient Chinese time keeping standards and you’d see that the Chinese used to divide the day into twelve equal parts (时晨). Yet the ancient Chinese did not commonly use a “circle” to show time. So I have no idea why they chose “twelve” as opposed to, say, ten. :man-shrugging:
