The net is wonderful for information and I get a lot of repair tips from places like YouTube, but I've noticed many young people seem like they don't have the mechanical or building skills they used to.

D2 has done simple repair things by finding videos on YouTube. She replaced a dryer door latch and an oven door gasket.

Millennials are bucking that trend. In their own way, they're bringing that mentality back with yarn-bombing, making weird shit in the kitchen, fixie fanatics, film photography, etc. It might not be what you did growing up, but hey, it's working with your hands.

More fathers did not work with their hands and did not have those skills to pass along. Cars got much harder to work on. Lots of reasons for that.
Now that said, my father did not teach me those things either. I learned them on my own out of either desire or economic necessity. Learned a lot from my FIL.

I have repaired the washer, stove and most recently, one of our furnaces (we have two) in the basement thanks to YouTube. I reckon that I have saved a minimum of $1500 or more on service charges and labour costs for repairs in the past five years. Most fixes take less than ten minutes to complete.

Maybe.Yeah, I think the internet is "net negative" in terms of news/social. But net positive for staying connected with friends/family, data storage (cloud!), and information access (maps, research, how-to videos, etc).
