A decision by Portland city leaders is drawing attention from across the country.
Portland is now the first to offer bereavement leave for employees after they have an abortion.
City Council unanimously approved the changes earlier this month.
Under the new policy, employees are able to take off three days of work after an abortion or any type of pregnancy loss.

Safe, Legal, and Rare is an admission that there is an ethical problem with abortion. So is bereavement leave. You don’t get bereavement leave for removing an appendix, do you?

Bereavement leave for "any type of pregnancy loss" ... this is a humane, empathetic policy.
If you believe it’s just a lump of cells then in what way is a “humane and empathetic policy” necessary? Should I get bereavement leave for my tonsillectomy?

Very few things are truly "necessary," even then you have to ask "necessary for what?"
"Humanity" and "empathy" are themselves not strictly necessary. I said only that the policy is "humane and empathetic", not that it is "necessary." Taking days off for Christmas and Thanksgiving and Independence Days is neither "humane," "empathetic," nor "necessary," yet you take time off for these occasions anyway.
From time to time, pull your head out of the pro-choice/pro-life dichotomy and see the humanity and empathy in letting those who have lost pregnancies to take some time off to grief.

Don't worry, man, it never crossed my mind you ever felt otherwise.
