@copper I actually presumed this was happening anyway. Also instagram.
What's funny to me is how much they still suck at it, despite all this intrusion.

Interesting, but so far we've only seen one point of view on the story. Let's see what Google and others say about this before fixing our conclusions.
I don't know mcuh about the online ad market - does anyone understand what the "bidding" is about that seems to be a central concept in that 170p document?

It's basically now Google AdWords has been working for years. If you bid on a term and win out the bid, your ad gets more exposure. I'm sure it's an assload more sophisticated now vs. when they first implemented it but that's basically the thing.

I believe there is also a marketplace to bid for people's "advertising ID" which is basically a way to identify you (via ID, not by name) and therefore provide ads based on proximity (i.e., you're close to a store) or based on internet behavior (e.g., you searched for "landslide election losses" and now you see ads for Trump burgers). Whoever bids the most, wins that chunk of ID data.

If only the right had planned ahead and gone public with this conspiracy theory, then the left would have laughed at it and declared it ludicrous and giggle worthy, and now, the left would be PWNED and it would be a good Monday! But now it's just a Monday where we learned that Google and Facebook are douches, but everybody already knew that. Apple is so much better, which everybody also knows, since I've told them, and people respect my opinions.
