To what degree has the government ever intruded in your life?

My wife an I are in the process of procuring her permanent green card. She was given her temporary green card a year or more ago, but there is another process to get the permanent card. Another application and documentation process, where we must prove that our marriage is real. I am not big on taking pictures, and my home is in my name, since I bought it long before we met. My utilities are in my name. I've already provided them documentation of her life here, her jobs here. I'm not big on taking pictures with her holding a copy of today's newspaper, since I did not in fact abduct her and am not asking for ransom, but that's mostly what the government wants. I think mostly the nameless faceless government tool stamping the application wants to see photo evidence of my penis inside her vagina, I think that would seal the deal. Do you think I should send pornography? Is our cultural obsession with pornography ultimately in service of establishing the reality of a relationship, so we know that some horrible Asian woman isn't entering the country illegally by manipulating some tool of a white man into marrying her? Do we really prefer Mexican illegals that much, that we need pornography to establish that a prospective Asian woman immigrant is as good as a Mexican illegal?

It me 9 months to get permanent residency in Canada. It took me 7 years in the US, and more money paid to lawyers than I'd like to talk about.
That's the price you pay for being the freest country in the universe.

What counts as interference? I have run afoul of a few pesky laws.

Getting a permanent Green Card is a PITA. But...ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Just lay back and think of England, and let the boffins do what they need to do...

No photo could ever disprove this.

I had no issue either sponsoring my wife as a Landed Immigrant ( the CDN equivalent of a permanent US Green Card ) or naturalizing our adopted infant son. In the case of the latter I did make an error on the application form but the Immigration Ministry notified me of my error and gave me more than sufficient opportunity to correct it. All in all I have had very good experience with government intrusion. The only people I know who have not...well, let's just say they flew plenty of flags to get unwanted attention and scrutiny. One thing they all had in common was surprise and indignation that they happened to come under the microscope.

You're the one who wanted attention, not me.
And now you're complaining.
You ask for other people's experience with perceived government intrusion. I shared my experience in a similar situation as your own. Mine was positive but I of know others whose experience was less so owing to their own doing. You have a problem with that?
Yes, of course you do.

Little man Renauda, Johnny on the spot with the compatriot experiences. Totally not about ankle biting those he dislikes. Oh no. He is fooling everybody. Mostly because he knows historical anecdotes. Super smart. And also compassionate. Not an angry little loser at all.

I wish I could say sorry about your rug but I'm not all that compassionate. But if you think I'm an angry loser think again and look at yourself.

Off the top of my head, here are a few things that should work very well at convincing the government that your marriage is real:
- Shared property, preferably your primary residence, with here name on the deed along with yours
- Shared bank/investment accounts
- Her designated as the primary beneficiary of your life insurance policies, bank and retirement accounts in the event of your untimely demise
- Have children together
Best of luck, @Horace and spouse.

DON'T DO ANYTHING HE SAID!!!!
IF.... and I know it's a big IF... but if somewhere down the road, your wife should "step out" on you and leads to the demise of your marriage, the fact that you did any of those suggestions, she... because of those actions, could wind up with 50% of your assets.
Ask me how I know....

@horace Not necessarily. I don’t know how CA works but in NY premarital assets are off the table in a divorce iff they stay titled in your name.

Well, I've had an accretive four years... but yes there's a minority of assets not subject to community property laws.

I'm still trying to work out whether Jon writing 'iff' was a typo or a too-clever-for-his-own good use of mathematical terminology, which shows you what a romantic devil I am!
