Europe celebrates May 8 as the day the war ended. We call that VE (Victory, Europe) Day. VJ Day was August 15th and was a much bigger celebration here, because then it was finally over.
When I lived in Paris in 2002 it was a public holiday, things were closed.

The UK had planned all kinds of celebrations for this - they moved the normal May Day holiday to today. Sadly, but not surprisingly pretty much everything's cancelled that would have involved any kind of social contact.

There are some significant differences with this:
I have no idea which is more accurate. They might be counting different things.
