24 inches at the butt

Cut three logs off a downed oak on the back of the place this morning. Cut the about fifteen feet, as I was having to skid them out with Red.
The bottom log was two foot at the butt. Not bad. But I've got an olly-knocker down not too far from this tree. It's a big pin oak, like you'll sometimes see in a flat. The old thing looks like she's four foot at the bottom. Too much sugar for a dime, for this redneck.

You can cut them for lumber. It will warp and check, kinda like red oak, so use it for cabinets, floors, etc. It's not as good as white oak, especially for shingles or anything else where you need real tight pores.
These will get cut for firewood.

Lot of folks never think of oak, but it does work.
I've got a pecan close to the same size that was halfway broken off about ten feet in the air. It's in the middle of a thicket and a booger to get to, but I'd surely like to have some to cook with.

Pecan is excellent smoking wood. I always have some chunks on hand.
Pecan and hickory are of the same family.
If I don't have wood, I'll use pecan hulls or gather up some old hickory nuts for smoke flavor. Soak them and add to the fire, they do pretty good.

A little large for a daily driver but every now and again, sure. These things are a matter of taste though.
