What I'd like to know is if this was preventable. Did our security apparatus have any intel that it could credibly happen?

I can see how the dems are doing this in a partisan way... but that's a different issue.

I think there are legitimate questions here. I didn't think a bunch of yahoos could do that to the capitol.

Most things are preventable, but how much time, effort and money do you wish to allocate to prevention?

For instance, if you are willing to die, you can assassinate almost any public person. To keep that person 100% totally safe would require keeping them in an insufferable bubble of security, and you better hope nobody penetrates your security screening.

As for this particular event, I'm sure there was some chatter out there. But there's always some level of chatter.

Stop and think...If the mob had only walked up the Capitol, screamed slogans, chanted and burned up their Congress Critter's email the next day, would we be having this conversation?

We could have locked the Capitol doors.

It will be blocked, no commission. Maybe the dems go alone.

I would be for the commission if there hadn’t been an impeachment. GOP types accepting and normalizing an attack on the Capitol show how far they have fallen.

I don't think anybody has normalized anything. I do think people have gained some perspective.

What went on at the Capitol is bad, but it wouldn't make a scab on a good cow's ass when compared to Seattle, Portland or Minnesota.

We are used to the protesting and riots within cities and states, nothing new there. An attack on the most important symbol of democracy is two next levels up, and I could hear every GOP of days of yore say that.

So you think the "normalization" of the Capitol riot is the real next-level problem here, while you accept the "normalization" of cities being taken over by the left's civilian armies, simply because one "normal" is newer than the other.

And that's accepting your claim that anybody is accepting as "normal" the Capitol invasion, which is not true of any mainstream opinion I'm aware of.

On the other hand, the broken eggs of cities being burned and looted and taken over by leftists is legit accepted as normal, in the face of the far greater evil of a white cop somewhere in the country doing something terrible to a black person.

An attack on the most important symbol of democracy is two next levels up, and I could hear every GOP of days of yore say that.

if it was a real, planned, military style attack, sure. This was an attack of opportunity, enabled by some unlocked and unguarded doors of this "most important symbol of democracy", by a handful of imbeciles who are paying the heaviest price we as a society can exact on them.

Or police stations being abandoned and communities left to fend for themselves against anarchy, all because the media-driven culture was, by and large, supportive of the anarchists.

I am right there with you on the cities, I don’t think it’s normal at all and I think they should lock up anarchists but it is an ongoing feature of Americana.

Jan 6 is next level truly but it’s an own goal and the stupidest strategy and to bitch about an own goal doesn’t pass the giggle test.

Jan 6 is next level truly but it’s an own goal and the stupidest strategy and to bitch about an own goal doesn’t pass the giggle test.

Yes, it was an own goal, and the messaging elite on the left love that it happened. They're glad the Capitol doors were unlocked and unguarded.

This is what you wanted Capitol insurrectionists, man up and take the consequences. Lock them up and then apply the same standard to future city riots but equating it to a city riot is bullshit.

Right, city riots and takeovers and abandonments of police stations, all supported by pop culture, are far worse than a small number of universally condemned imbeciles who trespassed into and vandalized the Capitol via unlocked and unguarded doors.

Horace isn’t the unlocked doors and mayor ask for no national guard all good but lesser points to the intent of the insurrectists? We have had decades of protests in DC and no one rushed the Capitol so the Capitol police didn’t expect it.

No but a mob mentality put things at high risk. What if a Senator, let’s say AOC was cornered, what might have happened? What about the fear they put into the Capitol Police?

They wanted to stop the vote, in that sense it was an attempted coup of the rule of law.

No, they wanted the vote to stop. There is a difference. And what do I think would have happened if they would have cornered AOC? Not nearly as much as what happened when Steve Scalise was cornered by a Bernie Bro a few years ago.

Here's the thing... Potential violence doesn't compare to actual violence. Congressmen that got their panties in a knot does not compare with the men and women that have had their businesses and lives destroyed in Portland. The young ladies that have been assaulted and raped at these autonomous zones would likely not agree with your assessment that it wasn't as bad as these asshats on January 6th.

There is no way of preventing Portland or CHAZ type riots, since the culture accepts them as basically just and the backlash against attempting to combat them would be severe and widespread. That's why there was no response. Meanwhile we are more than happy to combat "Capitol insurrections" now that we're on alert about them. Yet the "Capitol insurrection" is the real threat? An insurrection that could have been easily prevented with basic security measures?
