Probably both sides thoughts something would happen but did not realize that it would get so big.

Let’s not forget the President egged these people on and sent them to the capitol.

Presumably he knew if people in the security apparatus did.

Did he want something to happen?

I still want to know why the Capitol Police opened the gates and the doors.

Are you still telling that lie? Did you not listen to what the President said?

Isn’t the premise of the article - “congressional leadership should have known the mob was going to attack the capitol”

If that’s true - think through the implications for Trump.

I don’t think you want to agree with this article.

Bolton and his staff reportedly found in its 104-page report that, three days before the riot, officials were warned in an intelligence assessment that “Congress itself is the target” in the planned protests. Congress was further warned that “Stop the Steal’s propensity to attract white supremacists, militia members, and others who actively promote violence may lead to a significantly dangerous situation for law enforcement and the general public alike.”

That would seem more than sufficient reason to call for National Guard support and assemble the full force and resources available to the Capitol Policee

I agree with @xenon Both sides had to know there was a high potential for something to happen. You would have to be nave to think otherwise. Both the leaders of congress and President Trump are either stupid or lying if they say that they did not expect bad things to happen.

I am sure that they did. BUT, both sides did not expect it to get so bad.

From the Presidents side, he was hoping he could say, "look, millions of US people came to Washington DC today in support of the stolen election. Yes, they got a little mad, but that is the mood of the country. In the end, nothing really bad happened today. That shows how under control they are."

From the Congress side, they were hoping they could say, "Look, hundreds of US people came to Washington DC today wanting to overthrow the legitimate election. You could see the violence in their faces. We were lucky we were prepared so nothing really bad happened today. That shows how out of control they are."

But, it got bigger than either thought it would and got out of control.

Trump specifically told the people at the rally to put political pressure on Congress. At no time did he incite the crowd to commit any illegal acts.

Would he not have seen the same intelligence that Congress saw? If Congress should have called the national guard on his crowd... shouldn't he have at least told his crowd to... chill?

The article says that the adults in the room should have had the foresight AND had the intelligence to call the national guard on Trump's crowd.

Russian Bounty, anyone? Never assume the President sees everything. Or that what he sees is given credence. His threat assessment paper is a lot more complicated than what lands on other people's desks.

But...Now we know that threat assessments were forwarded to Congress. They could have stepped up security if they wished. On thus one though, I can understand a bit. There is always some threat or potential problem swirling in the air with any large public event in Washington. There had not been any type of violence at any previous Trump rallies. I assume the intelligence was looked at and a decision was made the possibility of threat was outweighed by the negative optics of heightened security.
