From what I can tell, the officer was part of the last line of defense (a barricaded door) between the mob and the chambers where legislators still were...maybe even Pence, although I'd imagine he was gone by then. Not surprised at all he shot when the first person tried to break their way through. Sad thing she died, but the shooting prevented the invasion at least from that hallway.

I think the woman who was shot also tweeted before the protest "nothing will stop us!", which clearly she was mistaken about.
