U.S. considering cash payments to Central America to stem migration

The United States is considering a conditional cash transfer program to help address economic woes that lead migrants from certain Central American countries to trek north, as well as sending COVID-19 vaccines to those countries, a senior White House official told Reuters on Friday.

The potential program would be targeted at people in the Northern Triangle region of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, Roberta Jacobson, the White House’s southern border coordinator, told Reuters in an interview, without saying who exactly would receive cash.

Roughly 168,000 people were picked up by U.S. Border Patrol agents at the U.S.-Mexico border in March, the highest monthly tally since March 2001 and part of steadily increasing arrivals in recent months.

“We’re looking at all of the productive options to address both the economic reasons people may be migrating, as well as the protection and security reasons,” Jacobson said.

She did not provide a detailed explanation of how a cash transfer program would work.

“The one thing I can promise you is the U.S. government isn’t going to be handing out money or checks to people,” Jacobson said.

Jacobson said no decision has been made regarding whether to prioritize sending vaccines to the Northern Triangle countries, but said that President Joe Biden’s administration would consider how vaccines could help the countries’ ailing economies. She said the vaccine issue remains separate from immigration-related discussions with the nations.

"Cash transfer to address economic woes" for migrants.

BUT, we're not writing checks, you see.

Can someone explain this to me?

@George-K you're a bit of a Malcolm Gladwell fan, right? Ever read/listen to his analysis of latino immigration? I think he has a compelling argument. I mean, it's been proven already.

        Please love yourself.

            Yep.

May work for awhile, but then it becomes an endless money pit...

The first thing to do is round up and kill all the gang and cartel members. I'm sure a few mistakes would be made, but likely less than what happens there on a daily basis.

              But we can't do that.

Wait, how does giving more money to the corrupt and incompetent leaders of those countries help those poor people? All it does is further prop up the bad guys.

I have always feel that the best way to fix the problem is to go to the "root cause". Build a wall/not build a wall, etc. is not going to stop people. And I am not just talking about the Mexico/US. Economic desperation is a problem. North Africa --> Europe; Stan countries --> Europe, China --> US, Burmese --> Thailand, etc etc etc

Now, as pointed above, many countries where the people are desperate have very corrupt governments. So, maybe giving money to them directly is not the answer. But, the ultimate answer lay's in solving the problems at the source, not at the end.

There is not enough money in the world to fix the problem at the source.

Doesn’t U.S. demand for illegal drugs create the cartels?

Rival cartels are already way more cruel than anything that would be reasonable to ask a US soldier to do.

Maybe we decriminalize their drugs? I honestly don’t know what’s worse. Unfettered legal access to drugs or the existence of ruthless cartels.
