It might depend on the height of your seat and where your knees are.

I have (cheap) CH Pro pedals. They work OK, but in order to get my toes on the toe brakes my knees are higher than I would like for comfort.

I have my keyboard on a shelf like below and I have to play around with it to keep from hitting my upright knees.

    ![alt text](7f7968be-da29-4932-bcb4-0e98ac94808e-image.png image url)

So the heel rest might be less desirable if it forces your legs into a more upright uncomfortable position. Or it might be more comfortable depending on the desk configuration and knee position.

And a lot of GA aircraft only have differential braking to steer (no nose wheel steering). For these you want to position your pedals so you can push all the way down with your toes.

Another thing you might think about with steering is that in a multi engine plane you might want to use differential thrust for steering. This is especially handy if you are landing on ice because brakes or nose wheel steering might not be effective. That not an obvious thing and it isn't all that common, but if it is something you might want to play with you will want a throttle quadrant with multiple throttle controls.

    @copper Thanks!

The Virpil pedals have a lot of adjustability for rake position, throw, tension, etc. I do intend on getting the throttle quadrant as soon as they are available.

I had to change out the wheel/yoke shelf on my 80/20 rig. It was replaced under warranty as the one side was bent and would not permit easy adjustment. GT Omega shipped a new steel shelf all the way from England. No charge. I also got to keep the bent shelf so I may have my buddy take it to his shop and bend it back straight. I might use it to build a dedicated flight rig.

I installed the Honeycomb yoke on the new shelf, connected my Racing pedals to USB direct vs. going through the racing wheel base, and fired up MS Flight Simulator 2020.

    20210303-135210.jpg

Please excuse the messy wires. I will be cleaning it all up soon.

And! a 36 Gigabyte, multi-hour download is being forced upon the software.

So, I have to wait... lol Thanks MS!

So much fun in VR! I learned how to land. Finally! Pretty simple once you take a lesson or two.

In VR I can actually use the controls by clicking and dragging the mouse on the throttle, mixture knobs, flaps, pitch trim, etc. It's like actually being in the cockpit of the plane and able to interact with all of the controls. I think a trackball might be something to try here.

Using no assists. Well, I turned Auto-Mixture on because I have to go to school on that yet. lol I did turn it off and had a mid-flight panic attack. lol

Flying is a calming pursuit. Unless something goes wrong.

Landings always equal the number of take off, don't they?

I guess there are the Voyagers, the answer is still not yet.

If you are in a hurry for the first lesson it goes like this,

Pull the stick, the houses get small
Push the stick, they get big

What else do you want to know?

Most instructors pass that wisdom along at some point.

Is there a flight simulator that would allow me to blow things up? I mean a program as sophisticated as MS Flight Simulator.

I had no idea you could buy all those gadgets, looks like a lot of fun because they try to make everything realistic, so you mess up and crash and burn, a horrible way to end your life and it's just a GAME!

I used to play "F-15 Flight Eagle" or something like that. It was a lot of fun I guess, but totally unrealistic all around.

Mark, how much would it cost, ball-park, to add all those accessories to a computer, assuming it's a good computer and not a hot rod like the one you built? I'm guessing $800 - $1,000 because everything costs $800 - $1,000 these days. Everything.

The sky is the limit here. pun intended. πŸ˜‰

You can spends tens of thousands on a rig.

The components that I am looking at range from $250 to $350 each. So, Yoke, Pedals, Throttle, throw in another switchbox, it will add up to about $800-$1000. lol

The extra switch boxes and throttle are not necessary in VR. You will be feeling around for them unless you activate passthrough video which takes you completely out of the immersive environment. I still think VR is the way to go in a flight sim. Spend several hundred or more on a good VR headset vs, $500 or more on a throttle / switchbox.

Oh! Motion rigs are an "affordable" thing these days. Used to be you had to spend $15k on one of the best "pro-sumer" commercial units that attach to the aluminum cockpit. Now they range in cost from $1,500 or so to whatever you can pay. These motion systems use an actuator at the 4 corners of the rig and move independent of each other, lifting and dropping each corner of the rig in sync with the movement/physics of the plane or car or whatever you happen to be in. The $150k per year ball of death would be perfect for space simulators.

For just under $2k you can get a 3 axis motion rig.

There are battle sims out there. I have not investigated any of them. I probably will at some point.

This is supposed to be brilliant. I couldn't get it to work on my gaming laptop for reasons I've never been able to figure out, but there's a free demo plane, and then you can buy additional aircraft.

If you are in a hurry for the first lesson it goes like this,

Pull the stick, the houses get small
Push the stick, they get big
What else do you want to know?

Pull the stick more, they get big again.

Is there a flight simulator that would allow me to blow things up?

                                  DigitalCombatSimulator.com

I'd post a link, but my work VPN blocks it.

This is supposed to be brilliant. I couldn't get it to work on my gaming laptop for reasons I've never been able to figure out, but there's a free demo plane, and then you can buy additional aircraft.

Mark, I'm pretty sure you'll need to invest in a HOTAS setup as well as your yoke if you're going to start with that program.

                                    Just saying...

If anybody's interested, there's some great stuff on YouTube covering DCS...it's kind of like MS Flight Simulator, but fun.

The saying, "Lite is just one damn thing after another," is a gross understatement. The damn things overlap.

The first one I played was called 'Worlds of Flight' for the Dragon 32 (32K of memory!), which was a UK-made clone of the TRS-80, and looked very much like that.
