In the US the 7 day moving average has plunged from a high one month ago of 255k to 83k yesterday.

One month, 2/3 drop. Who would have guessed.

How long did you think this wave would last?

I would expect our vaccinations to show up in the death rates soon. And eventually in reduced case count.

      You were warned.

Some places have reduced testing to focus on vaccinations. I agree the hospitalizations and death numbers will tell the story.

Not to mention the number of cycle on the PCR test has been decreased, supposedly to standardize and reduce false positives.

PCR cycles help you determine which DNA is in there, but any contamination also gets amplified, then you get false positives. You are not looking for contamination.

It's basically back where it was in early December. Is that particularly surprising? There was a huge increase following Thanksgiving, and another one after Christmas.

But but but the virulent South Africa strain with the huuge R0 that was taking over all cases and looked like the vaccines wouldn’t work. That was science a month ago.

I don't think that expressing concern about potentially more dangerous variants is particularly unwise.

What would you prefer? Have people say things like "We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China. We have it under control. It's going to be just fine."

All I am saying is the drop was not predicted by anyone. I have also always suspected many more people have had Covid than we realize and also heaping scorn on people that tell us herd immunity may come sooner rather than later is uncallled for. The trust science crowd may be listening to the wrong scientists.

As I said, the death rate is roughly the same as it was in early December. The scientists predicted a big surge after Thanksgiving and Christmas, and sadly they were right.

I think it's too early to declare victory at this stage, but hopefully it will continue to decline - that would be wonderful.

We were just cruising around the area and ran across a Mardi Gas style party. Must have been 200 people. No masks that I say, no distancing.
