I thought his twitter account was shut down

I remember I was happy that Mr. Nixon was not in attendance at Mr. Ford's swearing-in

With Mr. Trump not in attendance, wouldn't it be a nice gesture, and a nod toward precedent, if Mr. Biden were to reach out to Trump supporters with an opening line like Mr. Ford's?

I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your President by your ballots, and so I ask you to confirm me as your President with your prayers.

If he deserves to be President today, he should be there during the transfer of power.

If you want to up the chances of having the transfer of power be a shitshow, by all means, have this embarrassment attend. If you want to up the chances of having a peaceful transfer of power, the embarrassment should keep his ass in a bunker from now until it's over.

Maybe leave him with a supply of cats to kick. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. You know how patriotic cats are.

Yes, and I agree, this is exactly what is needed.

Maybe his tweet was cut off. His reason for not attending is he'll be in jail?

Johnson was not there for Grant. It's not required.

But Kennedy was there for Johnson, in body if not in spirit.

At this point he shouldn’t attend. It’s a very wise choice. Period.

It is not surprising but still very sad, and just another mark against President Trump.

As @Jolly said quite correctly, you should respect the office of President, even if you do not agree completely with the person having it. (Maybe not exact words, but I think that is what you meant)

His election loss was a tremendous blow to him psychologically. He's been reeling. He's had defeats in the past, but has always been able to convince himself that none of it was his fault: self-exoneration. But this time, no matter what he did, the message kept coming back from every institution, every quarter: You lost, you lost, you lost -- repeatedly, unavoidably, inevitably.

He has no foresight. You and I, we would think something like, "I might lost this contest; if I do, I'll do X." We would be prepared. I think Trump doesn't possess that mechanism. "I always find a way to win."

So it's kind of anybody's guess what he will do from now on. I kind of think he'll sulk in his tent, but I make no predictions.

We'll see a lot less bloviating, probably.

Is there any sane argument behind believing this isn't a good idea?

If he deserves to be President today, he should be there during the transfer of power.

Johnson was not there for Grant. It's not required.

I think it's only happened 3 times. Johnson was the latest (150 years ago?) and the other two times were when Beethoven could still hear.

                                        @copper Nixon attended Kennedy’s Inaugural

Unfortunately Kennedy did not make it to Nixon’s.
