      Condolences to the family.

Herring was born in 1933 and attended the University of Oklahoma, but did not graduate, before enlisting in the Air Force, where he flew B-47 and B-52 bombers. He flew 288 combat missions in Vietnam, eventually becoming a B-52 squadron pilot and a squadron aircraft commander. He earned numerous decorations before retiring in 1973 as a lieutenant colonel and starting an auto-detailing business.

I cannot help but think back to my father in law's concern before his death about the things he had needed to do in the Korean war as a machine gunner. If you were doing hundreds of B-52 bombing runs over Vietnam and probably Korea I suspect you might have similar thoughts, even if you didn't have to actually see the carnage you wrought. I hope he found peace with himself and his faith.

Sad recount of how it unfolded. Apparently he was fine for weeks at home and then took a turn for the worst overnight one night. None of the family got to speak to him again.
