My 2 year old is getting a goldfish for Christmas. The pet store employees, while helpful, were...judge-y.

“You don’t want a goldfish, you want a beta fish”

“You’re going to put that goldfish in that small 1-gallon tank?”

“You know goldfish grow up to be quite large after 12-18 months”

“How about this special goldfish (as they point out a white version with an orange saddle design)”

I was half tempted at just saying “all of this doesn’t matter since I’m going to grill it up tonight”.

Pro tip: Get one that is NOT unique looking. that way when it goes belly up you can replace it and kid is none the wiser.

I've heard that the eventual size of the goldfish depends on the size of the tank, so you should be fine with the small tank.

@brenda true, I also told the employee that we are moving to Minnesota in six months and don’t anticipate the goldfish making the trip

Pro tip 2: When the fish inevitably goes belly up, do not let them see you flush it. It raises lots of uncomfortable questions about deceased relatives.

I had a pair of goldfish while in college, George and Myrtle, named after some relatives. George jumped out of their fish bowl nearly every day, and I would check frequently to see if he needed to return to the bowl. It needed a screen over the bowl, because books blocked the air. He eventually succeeded in achieving his demise. I suspect he was trying to escape Myrtle, who was a champion at creating tremendously long strings of poo, trailing them along like a feather boa on a drag queen.

@axtremus she gets it Friday morning. I’ll let you know! It’s one ACTIVE fish, I wouldn’t be surprised if it jumps out of the bowl before then.

Maybe the water needs to have the chlorine treated to make it safe for fishies. I use a product to treat the froggos' water. It's cheap and lasts nearly forever. I'll find a link for you. BRB
