Cadillac has 880 dealerships nationwide, and now, citing sources familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reports that 150 of them have taken a $300,000 to $1,000,000 buyout to cease operations instead of investing $200,000 in charging infrastructure and other updates to their facilities to support the brand's electric future.
This is a little more than one in six Cadillac dealerships nationwide, so in a nutshell, a fair amount of them will probably close. It's unclear if GM expected so many to take the buyout, however, a $200,000 investment is likely a lot to ask for many dealerships, especially during a pandemic.
Cadillac has previously shown interest in reducing its number of dealerships several times, offering buyouts much in the same manner it is now. As it stands, Cadillac has far more dealerships as compared to other competitive brands like BMW, which had just 341 sales locations nationwide as of 2018. Mercedes-Benz, similarly, had just 363 dealerships as of 2019, a fraction of the number Cadillac's 800 despite having greater vehicle deliveries to dealerships.
It appears that Cadillac's electric future was unappealing to a number of dealerships, but GM really wanted them gone anyway. Fewer dealerships mean decreased costs, something that could potentially boost the brand's profits, which Cadillac, an automaker who still offers a fair number of less-popular sedans, definitely needs.

I never considered a Cadillac as an option although I think they did a good job of making the brand appeal to a younger set. I do think in general US auto companies manufacturing sedans in the US is a no go and electric cars will take years to get to volume to support so many dealerships. So, the article makes a lot of sense to me.

I think my next car will be a pick up. And I’m not a contractor, farmer , or have any MAGA stickers. Just sort of bucket list kind of thing.

I was looking at the big pickup last year, but then I realized it wouldn't fit in my garage.
So I got the Cadillac instead, for about half the price.
I can remember when your sedan got old you could trade it in for a new pickup. Now, it's the other way around.

Truck prices are ridiculous. My truck is worth more money today after 5 years and 70k miles than what I paid for it, all because of the ridiculous price of new ones. My wife's car is a Cadillac, but she doesn't like to drive so for the most part it just sits. I've heard rumors that Lincoln is coming out with a new Town Car next year. If they do I'll trade in mine. If they don't, I'll just keep driving the one I have because to me it is the best sedan ever made.

Funny, a friend of mine who ALWAYS buys used just bought a brand new truck. He said the prices of lightly used trucks are so high it made no sense not to buy new.
This guy was replacing a 93, so he intends to keep the new one forever.

I really don't understand the usefulness of a pickup in most situations. They tend to be large, ungainly, and unless you're hauling shit, the bed is wasted space. Living in a condo, in particular, makes it even less appealing for me.
Are they more "fun" to drive?" I dunno.

The full size are very comfortable. I loved mine, and it was very handy to be able to haul mulch, lumber, furniture, etc. i still miss having one. I even loved my $800 88 Jeep Commanche. Great clearance.
I almost bought a Cadillac SRX or whatever they were called - the smaller SUV. Loved the look of them and I had never owned a Caddy. Then I discovered they were built in Mexico and I just could not wrap my head around a Mexican Cadillac.

It's funny - you can buy brand new full sized truck in the 30K range. But then you see this feature on one, that feature on another, and before you know it you're lusting over a 90K truck.
I've probably bought my last truck too. I l9ve mine. It's loaded, runs and looks like new, and in 5 years I've only put 70K miles on it and it can easily last 300K miles.
What I'm looking forward to is a new Town Car. Unless it comes out and they've butchered up some midsized Ford to make the thing.

Yes, for you it wouldn't make sense to get a truck, unless you bought a small one like a Toyota Tacoma. My truck, like a lot of trucks now, has a roll up bed cover and a key lock on the tailgate, so you can carry stuff in the back unseen and locked up. So that might make having a truck bed more useful to you. But even then what would you really need to haul..

Even after 30 years, I still love my truck. Yes, get a pickup truck. You will soon wonder why you waited so long. Get a 3/4 ton truck, not a 1/2 ton. You'll be able to haul just about anything you need to, and you will definitely be needing to do that hauling. Just think of how many cases of wine you'll be able to put in that truck bed.Get a full 8-foot bed for your truck, not one of those shorty things. Get a real truck: Full 8-foot bed, 3/4 ton, 4-wheel drive. This is the recipe for happiness. You deserve all the happiness.

There is a reason you still see Lincoln Town Cars, which have not been built since 2011, all over cities as limos. I love them.
That's what mine is, a 2011. Big, smooth, quiet, (QUIET!!) Seats like barcoloungers, and it gets 27 mpg on the interstate. All I've ever had to spend on it was for tires and oil changes.
Now about that 88 Jeep Commanche.... loved those things. Never owned one, but they were great little trucks.

A pickup is more handy than an extra shirt pocket. There's a reason it has a bed and a reason it has a tow hitch.
I look at pickups in three categories:

Small half-tons, 2WD or 4WD. The Toyota Tacoma with the four-banger may be the best if the breed. Ride quality and capability may suffer - you don't want to hitch up a 18 foot trailer with a four thousand pound tractor - but gas mileage and handling are good.

Regular half -tons, 2WD or 4WD. F150, Tundra, Sierra, etc. The four door ones replace the family car for a lot of people down here, although bed capacity suffers. Never seen any sense in buying a bed so short, all you can haul is your lunchbox. Anyway, the trucks ride well, have good towing capacity if set up well and can haul a good bit.

3/4 and 1-tons, 2WD or 4WD. These are the bigger work trucks. Big V8's or diesels. Might even be duallies. These are hauling goosenecks of hay, heavy equipment, large travel trailers or doing hot shot work.
I priced some pickups last week, just for shits and grins. A basic 2020 Ram Quadcab with a 4.7L V8 was the cheapest, coming in at around $33k. Larry is right, though...You start spec'ing one up and you better reach for your wallet...
