What other reason is there to work than to earn a living?

Other way around. It's not that there are other reasons to work, it's that there are many, many more ways to earn a living, thanks to the internet and its distribution model.

    Please love yourself.

It's a shame you're white, you could have went to work for the government...

I should have been a bit more clear. My point was the link between willingness to work and any money.

Like - Mexicans come up across the border and wait around uhaul stores to try to get odd jobs helping people move.

        That’s an improvement for them.

Personally I knew some folks for whom moving to Canada, getting a minimum wage job and taking up in a shithole apartment with a couple of other people was a literal dream come true.

The fact that these people are willing to be more entrepreneurial is not a surprise.

            I've done that, actually. Twice.

I'd rather work at Starbucks. Far more competent co-workers, far more job satisfaction, far less time wasted.

            Please love yourself.

Not at all. And they have the right mindset, definitely.

Families make cowards out of men the world over. 😁

I absolutely made the right move getting out of there, though. I don't know what happens next but the promise of job security was putting many other things at risk. (My health, just for starters. I was squarely in stage I hypertension while working there, working up to stage II. About 10 days out and I'm down to an average of 125/85.)

                    Please love yourself.

Was just on a Skype call with my old boss and co-workers. It was an unsanctioned going away event for my old boss and the EA.

                        It was fucking surreal.

First of all, almost 40 percent of the organization was on this "secret" call. And the vibe of it was completely not what you expect. It was hilarious, folks had their kids on the call, there were people making s'mores in their backyard, lots of jokes and screwing around. Sure there was bitching but it wasn't angry or bitter, it was "congratulations for getting let go, we're so happy for you!!" Everyone understood that the people to feel sorry for were the ones still there; there was no ambiguity about that.

Surreal. It wasn't like an office happy hour at all. It was much more like if a domestic abuse support group had a virtual cookout.

                        Please love yourself.
