Actually, I see why the writer thinks it's not a bad thing. Because of the times we were living in, we have been creating people with a world of narcisstic, petty problems. Self over all else.
The virus is a reset button, hopefully reducing some of the silliness.
That's not something to be happy about, but it is a positive aspect of a horrible situation.

Burning old ladies at the stake - stupid shitThese occurred without people having the comfort of an easy life.
Now, a gang of youths mugging an old lady is also stupid shit, as are people being concerned about what the Kardashians are up to this week, however compared to WW2 I would humbly contend that they're not really that bad.
