When Apple announced new products it used to be a big event. Now one clicks on the next story after 2 seconds.

That's because there are no new products, just upgrades to existing ones.

When's the last time Apple, Google or Microsoft introduced anything new?

The only thing that comes to mind is the Apple Watch. Yeah, it's a Fitbit on steroids, but it's not really an upgrade to the Fitbit - it's a computer on your wrist.

If they figure out a way to make the iPad Pro truly replace laptops, that'll be amazing. But so far that's still a pipe dream for many.

      Please love yourself.

        Indeed.

I love my iPad Air 2. It's perfect for casual browsing, streaming a video from Netflix (or my Mac) while I lie in bed, etc. Playing a stupid game, yeah...

        Serious content creation? Spreadsheets?

Nope. Gimme a Mac (or whatever). I've always considered them to be content consuming vs content creating.

Accessories is big business. Airpods alone would be a F500 company.

They’re trying to push services and subscriptions now too.

They don’t need new products to make money in new ways.

            I think that's it.

Jobs is probably rolling over, though.

              If they'd allow you to dual-boot iOS/MacOS, I think that'd be it.

Depends on the content you want to create. A TikTok video can be shot and posted entirely with just a phone.

@George-K I like the 12 mini too because it reminds me of my previous iPhone... 4 (I think?) that just was easier to use/scroll with one hand. Then I went iPhone 6, and now am on iPhone X and have gotten used to the size. But still, I remember the 4.

However (plot twist) I don't think I'll go with the 12 mini just because I use my phone for a ton of videos/photos with the (almost) 2 kids I would love the extra photo gadgets that come with the 12 Pro. I think I'll do without the case this time, so that might make the phone easier to hold, and am glad the flat sides are back.

BTW...been thinking about getting the iPad Air w/Magic Keyboard. My wife is in need of a laptop replacement and she's hinted an iPad would probably be sufficient for what she uses her laptop for these days...which is not much.

@George-K yeah, I don't even see a single use case.

No one downloads gargantuan files on cellular. LTE is almost good enough for full 4K - which would be ridiculous on a 6 inch screen.

Maybe there's some use-case for super low latency... haven't really seen it for a smartphone.

I think the main reason for 5G isn't its maximum speed, but the speed it can deliver when many users use the same tower concurrently. If you sit in an airport and 300 people use the same mobile access point, then you need to divide the max speed by 300.

That said, I agree that 5G isn't very useful at the moment.

I saw a MacBook Air for $850 at Amazon yesterday. If it were me, given either/or, I'd go with that over an iPad.

Right - but even that is an argument for lowering wireless carrier capex rather than a novel new end-user experience. With enough LTE access points, even dense gathers can have good coverage - it's a matter of infrastructure outlay.
