Couple weeks back I mentioned that I was likely going to reuse procedure masks that I had worn on my walks.

You asked if I had a UV light.

I didn’t, but I bought one of these. Designed for phones but fits a mask perfectly. They were already back ordered, but I found an unopened one on eBay.

I’ve been thinking about getting one of those for the HEPA filters I use in our masks as well, but was wondering a couple of things:

      1. If you have enough masks or filters, couldn’t you just rotate them out? Use 1 then let it sit 5 days? The virus doesn’t last more than 3-4 days on most materials. Wouldn’t that hold true for the masks?

      2. would it be worth going the extra $40 or so to get one of the UV wands?

Saw the Phonesoap products at CES.
I was intrigued but didn’t ultimately wasn’t interested enough to buy.
I’d be interested to know if it works well for you.

LD - I think that approach should work.

Ax - hard to say how well it works, it’s not like I’m sending these out to a lab.

I liked this one because it seemed to have bettter testing behind it and better reviews. Designed to reflect light on all sides, it does an automatic 10m cycle when you close it. No need to flip and repeat.

I’ve done my phone, credit cards, keys too, because why not?

It’s actually kind of gross to think about how dirty your phone gets.

Jon, agreed, although before all this I would often tell myself "Eh, it's good to be exposed to the natural germ build up on my phone." I would go many months without wiping down my phone (or keys, cards, etc). Now I wipe them all down whenever I go to the grocery store (2x a month).

Well, for most people it is healthy to keep the immune system busy. This right now is a special situation, but in general there is such a thing as too much hygiene, at least if you believe the "hygiene hypothesis", which states that too much hygiene causes allergies etc (but from what I understand the science on that isn't settled).

Does UV light actually work against the virus? What are the limitations? (How long does it have to be on, what about material that has a lot of stringy fibers, will it work on N95 masks, etc.?)

                Please love yourself.

They’re very careful with their language around Coronavirus since it hasn’t been specifically tested but they talk about this being 99.9% effective against other viruses with similar lipid casings.

This does 10 minutes, I don’t know the wattage. UV-C.

This particular device wouldn’t do an N95, unless you can flatten them out. It’s not deep enough

Yeah, I saw from the photos. Still, I ordered one. It seems it'll do keys, phones, and other masks, no problem.

What kind of back order did they have?

I went to eBay and overpaid for an unopened one.

This is what my daughter is wearing in the Emergency Department now. I saw it on Amazon yesterday, it is not there today.

Same. I ordered two; one for my folks. Overpaid by about 10% for both.

I got a sleek white one.

But I paid 215. I didn't care. I saw the knockoffs on Amazon and they looked worse than fake. It was either burn masks (themselves bought dearly on eBay) or buy the thing.
