But, in the context of history, so were Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, John Entwhistle and Prince.
And countless others.
I was never a fan, but, as Phibes comments, I appreciated his talent.

He was a coke and alcohol addict. I can tell you that cocaine is the most evil substance known to man. Instantly addictive. It can take you places darker and deeper than anything I know. It's major effect is to make you want more cocaine.

I just read this bit of trivia: Before Eddie Van Halen became famous, he worked as a piano and organ delivery man for a music store in his hometown.

Meh. Mostly slab ranch houses. We had to take uprights and grands up and down circular staircases.
