I've spent most of the afternoon listening to Lyle Lovett.
Goodness, what a talent he is.
Link to video*It's not the words you know I'll always love you
It's not the words I wish that I could stay
It's more the way your lips looked as you spoke them
And how the moonlight fell upon your face
I married her just because she looks like youAnd for every time you said no she says honey I'll be glad to
And for every time you left me she says darling I'll be there
It's not the words you'll get over me that made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like youAnd if I had not searched for you I never would have found her
And if I had not loved you I would never have known love
It's not the words please try to forget me
That made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like youAnd for every time you knocked me down she reaches out to help me
And for every time you cursed me she says darling I love you
It's not the words time heals everything that made my dreams come true
I married her just because she looks like you
I married her just because she looks like you*I've always loved this song...
"I married her just because she LOOKS like you."
And his version of "Stand By Your Man..."

My favorite Lyle Lovett song:
That and "Freaks Like Me."
Well, there's "Here I am"
Link to videoIn between the musical segments, there's some dialog:
"Hello
I'm the guy who sits next to you
And reads the newspaper over your shoulder
Wait
Don't turn the page
I'm not finished
Life is so uncertain"(music)
"Given that true intellectual and emotional compatibility
Are at the very least difficult
If not impossible to come by
We could always opt for the more temporal gratification
Of sheer physical attraction
That wouldn't make you a shallow person
Would it?"(music)
"If Ford is to Chevrolet
What Dodge is to Chrysler
What Corn Flakes are to Post Toasties
What the clear blue sky is to the deep blue sea
What Hank Williams is to Neil Armstrong
Can you doubt we were made for each other?"(music)
"Look I understand too little too late
I realize there are things you say and do
You can never take back
But what would you be if you didn't even try?
You have to try
So after a lot of thought
I'd like to reconsider
Please if it's not too late
Make it a cheeseburger""Please, if it's not too late, make it a cheeseburger."

Yep. He's a huge favorite of mine for 30 years. Seen him half a dozen times. His band is crackerjack too. I first saw him with Rickie Lee Jones as the warmup,as with this video. People did not understand her as they thought they were seeing a country show. We ended up right down front.

That was fantastic. A concert with both Rickie Lee Jones and Lyle Lovett..... now that would have been an incredible show! Both are excellent story tellers, both have a unique sound, both have a quirky approach to music. Lovett's lyrics are like peeling an onion. On the surface they can sound simple, even silly. Listen to the song a dozen times and you begin to realize there's a lot more being said than you thought.
I had never heard Jones sing that way. I've always loved her solo quirky stuff:

As great as Joe was, the odd thing about that video is that at no point does she wear a hat.
