Last night, I finally secured my long-term rental solution and save myself a ton of money in the process. I am moving out of my current villa that is costing me €3100 per month for a place just down the road for €1100 per month it is three levels each of approximately 700 ft.² one walks through the front door into the middle level which contains a big foyer where my Baldwin will proudly sit in a bathroom and a small bedroom behind that where my computer station will go upstairs are two more bedrooms and a bathroom and a balcony downstairs. The basement will be my home theater system, and electronic keyboard set up for practicing my rock music as well as the kitchen. The basement also has a separate stairway that goes up to the backyard where there’s an incredibly large slab of concrete where I plan to purchase a Hotsprings Grandee hot tub. It will also act as a doggie door so that the dogs have ingress and egress whenever they want to the garden and best of all the home is located in a very quiet street with very little car traffic I can actually build some wealth living here and park away my European travel money into a piggy bank. I may even splurge for an espresso maker ha ha

I had two long conversations with two wonderful people. Both are in their mid 80s and live in Olympia Washington. I left a phone message and it was promptly returned by Del’s wife Barbara I explained my reasoning for calling and shared my story of how I got here and she was very enamored and promised to have Del call me back as soon as he woke an hour later. Del called me and we spoke for about a half hour talking about pianos. I will cherish that conversation for many years if there’s a man in this country that knows more about the pianoforte than him that person is not known to me. Del didn’t start working for Baldwin until 1985 and as many of you might know from back in the day when this forum actually talked about pianos regularly, he created the Charles Walter flagship models. I kind of wish. Larry and Jolly were here because they would certainly engage whenever piano topics came up. I shared my whole story with Del from the seven-year-old boy who watched as a delivery truck brought in a brand new Baldwin acro sonic into my home where I started my piano journey and I finished with my current status today with the SD 10. I did not get direct assuredness of the year of this piano. He leaned more to the belief that it was most likely more than that the actual year it was manufactured 1969 but he also stated that there was no drop in quality from the genesis of 1965 when they first started making sd-10’s. He did have a good understanding of the timeline of the move from the Cincinnati facility to Arkansas, and he actually believes that my piano was one of those in a transition phase where it was started in Cincinnati and finished off in Arkansas. He could also tell me that since my piano started out with renner action that that immediately eliminated the possibility it was 1965 through 1967. That was when Baldwin transition to the Renner from their native Baldwin action which was problematic he was somewhat agreeable to my hypothesis that if Baldwin was making the quality SD tens today that they made in the 60s that the price point would be over $150,000 range but not quite up there with C bechstein and the like. But he also allowed for the fact that the Baldwin name today doesn’t have the strength of the other big companies because of its history so that would be a partial reason why the SD 10 would be priced lower than the top line concert grands. It was all just hypothetical talk of course since Baldwin stopped making the SD 10 back in 1997.He definitely had a strong opinion about how it stood up against the Steinway D and he agreed that the Baldwin was superior. And here is something that he stated that blew my mind. He said baldwin only made 5 to 10 of these Sd-10’s per year back in the 60’s. The whole storing of these pianos in a warehouse for multiple months was also shot down and he related how these pianos got sold. A committee would come to Baldwin, with an artist , who would sit down and play maybe three separate sd-10’s on display to choose the one they would end up buying. These pianos never really made it to a dealer’s showroom floor.
