Butte. A toxic waste dump. (Seriously - I think it’s the largest superfund site in the United States). Also has the coolest old Buildings and the most Ghost Signs. So much history, something like 10,000 miles of mining tunnels under the city - mostly filled with water now, they get all their copper and molybdenum surface mining. An HUGE amount of money every day still comes out of this place.

It is also a landscape painter’s dream. (From my perspective)

I know it well. The USEPA rep there gave me and a couple of colleagues a tour of the mine site. Disturbing to say the least.

My maternal grandmother was born not far from Butte. Close to Virginia City in a little Irish village called Laurin - now, for all intents and purposes, a ghost town although the old red stone RC church and school are still in operation.

@jodi great views, and I remember seeing CBS Sunday Morning segments about Butte. I also remember the one time I was in Montana the 80 mph on windy open highways felt dangerous with trucks flying by in the other direction. Maybe next time I'll drive on the right side of the road, though.

@horace nice brag! The cost of living in my area vs northern virginia isn't as much of a discount as folks back in Virginia think but the biggest change I'll never take for granted is I go places without pulling up google maps or waze for "which way doesn't have sucky traffic". I did that everywhere in Virginia, but now I don't check the traffic at all. When I'm kid-free during the day sometimes I'll knock out like 6 places in a half hour (target, gas station, panera coffee [I have their Sip Club plan], HyVee [groceries], UPS store to return an amazon item, and maybe the hardware store). Parking and walking into a store without getting kids in/out of a vehicle is a luxury!

We stopped there once, it has a cool old church.

Yep, that’s the place. They had a farm somewhere nearby then sold it and came to southern Alberta to homestead sometime around 1903. Eldest sister was a school teacher and stayed in Montana, later married and settled in Kalispel where she spent the rest of her days.
