It's an odd result of our system. The extremes get the media attention, yet I bet a good 75% of the country would support (heck, be passionate about!) a moderate candidate if they didn't have the left and right fringes of the tug of war pulling them to one side or another. I'd imagine most folks want: respectful leader, strong national identity, rule of law with pragmatic sympathy, fiscally responsible, moderately social... or the magic wand of: keep me safe, keep the rule of law just and blind, keep my 401k healthy, and bring back affordable prices.

"Wanting" is one thing, actually putting in the time and effort to adequately evaluate the options and choose the option that has the best chance of getting them what they want is something else. Heck, it requires much time and effort to develop one's intellect to the point where one can adequately evaluate the options, many fail even at that.
