I'm torn on the Fairness Doctrine. Certainly I can see how it conflicts with free speech, but holy shit how news/media got SO MUCH WORSE since it was removed and we saw a substantial increase in political hackery, for-profit bias and misinformation, and a substantial decrease in trust and civics fluency.

The playing field the fairness doctrine was meant to referee, is all but abandoned and irrelevant anyway.

It was only relevant, and only constitutionally justifiable, when there was scarcity of broadcast bandwidth. Once we got cable it was hard to justify and when we got internet impossible.

It did have its benefits though.

But, I would go farther than that. This was a massive mistake on Trumps part because it also reverses the moral standings. Americans in general cannot have two things be true in their own heads. They can’t comprehend that Kimmel trying to misinform the public on the motives and philosophy of the shooter is morally and ethically reprehensible while also acknowledging that the administration trying to shut him up is also morally and ethically reprehensible. They can’t see both being true at the same time, so instead they take idiotic stances on either side.

Personally? I at least trust the courts and the rule of law to correct the damage done by Trump on this one. The damage done by Kimmel is already out there.
