No, while the family seems to have a conservative leaning background, they weren’t “MAGA” as has been portrayed, unless you count myself, Mik, etc as MAGA.

But, the reports are that the kid took a hard left turn at college, and was even one of those AOC “confront them at Thanksgiving Dinner” types.

The writings on the shell casings were simply internet meme culture jokes. Even the one that was furry related. Hell, Luke knew them immediately, and for the past month has been telling me about the Helldiver game this kid also seems to have played. Luke also took a bit of a leftward turn in college. I think all kids do. But I think the difference between this kid and Luke? His senior year in HS, he started repeating some of the things about JK Rowling being Anti-Trans. So I asked hint to cite for me what she’s said and posted. So he started showing me posts where others said she said ———- and she did —————. I told him, no, I want you to show me her direct writings and statements, not how somebody else interpreted them. So he pulled them up and came back saying “what she’s saying is kinda being mischaracterized, but she’s been getting meaner and snarkier about it”. I replied “go look at the comments in her first posts, go look at the pressure put onto her colleagues to condemn her simply for originally saying dress how you want to dress, love who you want to live, sleep with who you want to sleep with, but don’t force women out of their jobs for protecting women only spaces. Take a look at the reaction to that and tell me you wouldn’t become a bit of a hardass? It’s either that or give in to the crowd and abandon your choices.

Since then he’s really taken ahold of the whole not taking any claim at face value thing. Yesterday he commented “Stephen King pulled a real asshole move with saying Kirk wanted to stone gays, that wasn’t what he was saying at all…”

    So there’s hope.

    Still conservative, right?
The Grok screenshot says only "conservative," not "MAGA."

Good for you, good for Luke. 👍 👍

Great job at teaching him to think critically.

I’ve tried responding the same way in Twitheads. Instead of arguing with people over wild claims, politely ask for direct citations, then politely ask if that citation really matches the claim.Doesn’t really work, but it beats beating your head against a wall arguing.

Yes. It beats "Is not!" "Is too!" nonsense. I try it too. It inevitably leads to moving the goal posts and changing the subject.

Hard left turn in college? He did a single semester 4 years ago and dropped out. But I guess anything’s possible.

Weird that that ‘fellow conservative’ narrative is winning the day on Twitter.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

As far as I can tell, anybody who isn’t giving highest probability to him having a basic anti fascist motivation (in the lowest common denominator sense of pop culture anti fascism), is avoiding the obvious. And only betraying how personally they would take it if the obvious were true.

You’re right, he took the hard left turn in HS, according to his classmates. But he didn’t start sucking girl’s dicks until college age, as far as we can tell.

Oh, I’m sure there’s a fair number of people enjoying gaming the system by making the ridiculous claim, and I’m sure there’s a bunch of stupid ass MAGA falling for the gaming and replying no and arguing with the rabble, which just raises the number of views and pushes the view in the algorithm, but I think we both recognize the number of kids that really think the kid is conservative or MAGA is tiny and consists of the mentally and emotionally disturbed.

I draw no conclusions about anything based on the AI headlines in your original post. But people believing what they want to believe, or not admitting what they don't want to admit, does not require any clever messaging or spin.

I listened to Derek Thompson's podcast today, and he opened with some words about the shooter's motivation. Thompson offers that people who do violence like that are almost always impossible to pin down to any mainstream political philosophy.

Variations of Thompson's avoidance are the norm for anybody who's made a lifestyle of reminding everybody who will listen that Trumpism is an existential threat. Bluesky types of lefties are admittedly actively engaged in claims that the shooter is far right, because the gamer culture where the jokes came from, is allegedly extremist right. Even that part of the claim is probably BS, to say nothing of the shooter's politics, which Occam still tells us are banal pop culture hatred of the right.

As I mentioned above, Luke knew that code from Helldivers immediately. He plays the game avidly, and leans left. Hardly a bastion of the far right. From my experience, the gamer culture is fairly apolitical, or far left.

Only you know the prompt you used. Since you’ve iterated twice that the AI response meant something about a certain point in time, and haven’t updated your experimental results for our current point in time, I assume that the current results aren’t fun for you to post. And it remains observable fact that claims about the shooter being on the far right, are the domain of wing nuts. Mainstream lefties meanwhile are engaged in simple avoidance.

                              Education is extremely important.

There’s no prompt and I don’t believe it’s personal to me in any way. You just go to the search tab in Twitter and the algorithm summarizes ‘today’s news’. Of course it’s different now. It’s been 12 hours.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I see. This morning it says "leftist gunman". Indicating something obvious and banal about reality, rather than anything about messaging spin.

                                  Education is extremely important.

My leftist brother has been strangely silent these past few days. It is my hope that the tsunami of anti-Trump, anti-conservative, anti-GOP posts that have characterized his social media presence have given him pause to consider his role in fomenting the hate that led to this.

I’m curious as to what, if any, common patterns or parallels can be drawn between Robinson with Crooks and Mangione. All three under thirty males (that is why I leave out the much older Routh) of documented above average intelligence and coming from seemingly good family backgrounds and no (known) prior criminal acts. Was there a common but, as yet, unrecognised, pathology at play? Or was it simply a matter of failing prey to the extremist and banal populism that leads to amoral and nihilistic thinking and, in these three instances, an immoral criminal act with tragic consequences? I don’t know.

                                      Elbows up!
