There's a house in our neighborhood (a few blocks from me) that was purchased 2 years ago but has remained unoccupied. Normally not a big deal except in the winter no one plows their sidewalks from snow, and in the summer, the grass and weeds get really tall. On the facebook HOA page there has been people commenting about it, what should be done, should the HOA board send fines, should a company be set up to take care of the landscaping, the county sheriff is going to have a public auction of the lien on the HOA dues (or whatever that means), and lots of back and forth.

So me, being weird as I am, just looked up the name of the owner, and then found him on facebook, and sent him a message. He just replied to me. He's in India, is moving into the house in 2 weeks, and has no idea about any of this (probably because he doesn't get any mail/notices/fines sent to the house). So I said, welcome to the neighborhood, and he said thanks and he looks forward to meeting his neighbors.

Awesome move to contact him. Very interesting that he left the home for so long without any occupants or maintenance. Was the yard maintained in the summer?

How much are the fines or whatever the HOA has assessed the property?

Yard hasn’t been touched in 2 years. Not sure about fines. I’d imagine it’s a few thousand at this point, including fees to pay the city to mow his yard.

Wow. Wonder what the inside looks like by now. Frozen pipes? Roof damage from storms? So many things can happen.
