It’s the oldest lighthouse in NY state, finished in 1796. Commissioned by one George Washington, then President of the United States, in 1792.

My wife has family on long island so I've been out that way a few times, back in our younger childfree days, we used to make a full day at the wineries on the north fork, and I learned all about rumors of the montauk monster and Plum Island (I know... not the lighthouse where you were)
