Yeah, the timing sucks big time for them. I have no idea what the job market will look like when my young kids graduate in 15-20 years.

Yeah though maybe they’ll have some insight into what the new opportunities are by then?

Current high schoolers choose majors with advice from counselors who still think like it’s 1995 and, though they see AI coming, can’t realistically figure out what are the good career options for 2035-2070.

I remember about 15 years ago thinking "if someone really wants job security, become a linguistic expert in a lesser known language", as I knew a few places willing to pay a LOT of money for folks who specialized in certain cultures and languages... now I'm guessing that is also getting wiped clean as a career given translation models out there.

Shortage of Merchant Marines means big money for new grads

I first become aware of the merchant mariners at a high school military academy recruitment event. After the major branches of the military and Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine academy got a bit of air time.

I figure it will take AI a long time to replace or displace merchant mariners. Not because it's impossible to build or retrofit fully automated ships, but because doing so will take too much money and too much time so at least another generation of merchant mariners' jobs won't embe threatened by AI.

I used to do real time translation, though not in a lesser known language. As you said, this is an area that is quickly being replaced by computers. I have a pair of translation ear buds and when I first got them, they were about 60% accurate with a time lag. Good enough to get a general idea of what was happening in a conversation, but not good enough to really participate. Now, they are about 80%+ accurate and I am sure, they will only get better.
