Yeah, it's a real thing in ancient China, well documented in history books. Also a common trope used in many period dramas produced in the Sinosphere today.

Other's might say (NOT ME--I'M NOT SAYING THIS, OTHER'S MIGHT, BUT NOOOO, NOT ME) that this is similar to the punishment being meted out to Hamas fighters in Gaza.
