He’s in that famous picture on Air Force One when they’re swearing in LBJ next to the newly widowed Jackie Kennedy. He wasn’t yet 30.

        Wow. Another real journalist gone.

I really enjoyed his programs on mythology and spirituality that were broadcast on PBS stations back in the 80s.

          RIP good sir.

Yeah, he really was the real deal when it came to journalism.

As I would have suspected he was the last survivor from that flight.

Here’s the full list of identifiable figures visible in that iconic Air Force One photo—left to right, based on detailed analysis by the LBJ Library and JFK photo archives ():
              1. Malcolm “Mac” Kilduff – Assistant Press Secretary, holding the dictating machine.
              2. Judge Sarah T. Hughes – The federal judge who administered the oath—the first woman ever to do so .
              3. Jack Valenti – JFK/Johnson media liaison, later longtime head of the MPAA .
              4. Congressman Albert Thomas – Texas Representative.
              5. Marie Fehmer – Johnson’s secretary, slightly hidden behind Thomas.
              6. Lady Bird Johnson – First Lady, standing to LBJ’s right.
              7. Dallas Police Chief Jesse Curry – Positioned behind Lady Bird.
              8. President Lyndon B. Johnson – At the center, taking the oath.
              9. Evelyn Lincoln – JFK’s personal secretary; only her glasses peek above LBJ’s shoulder.
              10. Congressman Homer Thornberry – Texas Representative; standing behind LBJ.
              11. Agent Roy Kellerman – Secret Service, partially hidden behind Thornberry.
              12. Agent Lem Johns – Secret Service, positioned near Mrs. Kennedy.
              13. Jacqueline Kennedy – The widow, in her blood-stained suit.
              14. Pamela Turnure – JFK’s press secretary, visible behind Jack Brooks.
              15. Congressman Jack Brooks – Texas Representative, in front of Moyers.
              16. Bill Moyers – Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Peace Corps, later LBJ’s press secretary.
              17. Dr. George G. Burkley – JFK’s White House physician, on the far edge of the frame .
              18. Cecil W. Stoughton – The photographer, not visible in the frame but integral to capturing the moment .

There were also a few additional background figures, including Charles Roberts of Newsweek, Kennedy pilot Jim Swindal, and others in the cabin, but these are the individuals most widely identified and named by historical sources .

Survivor status (as of June 27, 2025):
Everyone in the photo has since passed away:
              • Sarah T. Hughes (d. 1985)
              • Jack Valenti (d. 2007)
              • Albert Thomas (d. 1966)
              • Marie Fehmer (d. 1994)
              • Lady Bird Johnson (d. 2007)
              • Jesse Curry (d. 1980)
              • Evelyn Lincoln (d. 1995)
              • Homer Thornberry (d. 1995)
              • Roy Kellerman (d. 1984)
              • Lem Johns (d. 1985)
              • Jacqueline Kennedy (d. 1994)
              • Pamela Turnure (d. 2011)
              • Jack Brooks (d. 2012)
              • Bill Moyers (d. June 26, 2025)
              • Dr. Burkley (d. 1995)

              ⸻

If you’d like, I can provide a deeper profile on any one of them or explore the roles they played that day.

Moyers was ordained as a Baptist minister already by then. What an interesting life.
